Volunteering at Square Lemon: A Rewarding Experience

Square Lemon has been hosting monthly craft markets at the Glebe Community Center since 2022. They have created a space for artisans to showcase their products.

Additionally Square Lemon donates a portion of the proceeds to other local non-profit organizations. Volunteering at Square Lemon's craft shows has helped me build confidence and connect with the Ottawa community.

Square Lemon markets are run solely by volunteers. As volunteers we are responsible for setting up chairs and tables, helping our vendors, and taking down said chairs and tables when the market is finished.

When I first started out as a volunteer I was nervous. At the time I was an artsy grade 9 student who struggled with social anxiety. I could tell it might be challenging for me but with the right people I could do it. When I arrived, I was met with kindness and support. I soon realized getting my 40 hours would be no problem.

Signing up is simple, you are welcome to email Dylan (our volunteer coordinator) at dylan@squarelemon.ca  or you can come by one of our upcoming markets and we would be happy to chat with you. You will be added to the volunteer email list. You will receive a monthly email invite where you can respond if you are able to volunteer at our next market. When you arrive at the Glebe Community Center head up to the second floor. We will be setting up chairs and tables for our vendors. There will be a market layout emailed to you. When vendors arrive you may be asked to help carry items and guide them to their table.

I’ve made some neat connections at the market. I wasn’t always the social type. My favorite part of volunteering at these markets is definitely socializing. From customers to Lemon Aid partners and vendors to volunteers, I've gained some lasting connections. I am currently working on an art trade with one of our regular vendors. I’ve worked closely with some Lemon Aid partners.

When I leave the markets, I am left with a positive feeling. As a non-profit organization, our volunteers make these markets possible. I see that my efforts are not only noticed, but also appreciated. During our Mother's Day market I was giving out our 5 year anniversary goodie bags. The winners were so appreciative. I still feel warm and fuzzy inside thinking about it.

In some sense giving is rewarding. When I give my time to Square Lemon I am rewarded by art trades/gifts from the community, volunteer hours and most importantly, connection!

If you or anyone you know might be interested in volunteering, send us a message. We are looking for volunteers from September to December and then again in February to May. Thanks for reading!
